Yet the Communist and Marxist critique of Zionism has always had a curious inconsistency, since it is not applied to all nationalist solutions of social problems. Thus Soviet and Chinese Communists regard their Marxist-Leninist ideology as perfectly compatible with Russian or Chinese nationalism, and the same is true of the 'people's democracies' in Eastern Europe or Asia where nationalism has been a predominant force. Similarly, Arab and Palestinian nationalism have been considered 'progressive' despite their very thin socialist content. Only in the case of Zionism, which historically has been a reaction to the failure of European and Islamic societies to resolve the Jewish question on democratic lines, has a major national movement been judged a priori 'reactionary', illegitimate and ultimately condemned to extinction. Anti-Zionism has become the great bazaar in which Soviet and Chinese Communists, Arab and Third World Marxists, Trotskyists, anarchists and Castroists together with feudal sheikhs, conservative Islamic rulers, and oil companies in the West (plus fascist fringe-groups) can find common ground in their antagonism to the Jewish State. Contemporary anti-Zionism is not merely the anti-Semitism of the left - Israel has even become the alibi for reviving the hoary Nazi myth of 'World Jewry' seeking to control and manipulate the fate of humanity. The essays in this book will give the reader a better understanding of the causes and possible consequences of this sinister trend. Mostly written between the Six-Day War of 1967 and the October War of 1973, they remain timely and important for the light they shed on a development whose implications are only now becoming fully apparent. They analyse the complex and changing factors which have influenced the position of the Communist parties and New Left movements towards the Middle East conflict, the significance of the 'anti-Zionist' campaigns in Russia and Eastern Europe, the dissentions and contradictions in western Communist parties, the relations of Soviet, Chinese and East German Communists to the Arab world, and the attitude of the post-Auschwitz New Left to Israel and the Jewish problem. All these disparate elements must be taken into account if one is to understand Communist and Marxist standpoints towards Israel and the Middle East conflict. Language is possibly the most important component of any collective identity. Indeed, any nation can be better understood through its imaginative literature and never more so than in the case of Israeli literature, whose story runs in parallel with that of the State of Israel and with Zionism. The political task of nationalism directed the course of Israeli literature into a distinct national literature and in turn the literature participated in the formation of the nation. Language became inseparable from identity. But whose Hebrew is it? Through key texts by such authors as Y. H. Brenner, S. Y. Agnon, Nathan Shaham, Yoram Kaniuk, Aharon Appelfeld, A. B. During this period, the Palestinian National Movement, in addition to its struggle with the Zionist Movement, was also involved in a struggle with the British Mandatory government. The primary professed goal of this struggle was to prevent realization of the program for a Jewish National Home, and to lead Britain to a situation in which it would be compelled to grant independence or a certain degree of autonomy to the Palestinian Arabs, as had been granted to other Arab countries, such as Iraq and Egypt. The press became integrated as a central factor in shaping the development of the Palestinian National Movement in a gradual process: it began emerging in the mid-1920's, its weight increased significantly during the events of 1929, and it peaked in the Great Strike of April-October 1936. The few studies conducted to date on the functioning of the Palestinian press during the Mandatory period dealt with the political aspects of the newspapers and with their articulation of the various political groups and powers in the Palestinian National Movement. The book examines how the various factors in play - the battle for air superiority, air-ground bombardment, armor, and infantry collisions - would shape the outcome of the conflict, discussing each factor separately in order to highlight its importance. The analysis draws on previous (mainly Arab-Israeli) conflicts, and also on the author's 20 years of experience in studying and doing research on Israel's national strategy and military doctrine. Fascinating new issues are looked at, such as the demilitarization of the Sinai Peninsula and both armies being largely equipped with US military hardware. How would the lack of military infrastructure in the Peninsula dictate the course of the conflict? What issues of identification and friendly fire would the similarity of equipment bring? The book also examines the variety of confrontations that Israel might face - such as high intensity, hybrid, and low intensity wars - and the corresponding responses and strategies it might choose in defense. This will be essential reading for anyone interested in modern high intensity warfare, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the possible future of the Middle East. *** 'Eilam presents a very cogent, judicious and compelling analysis of what the future military confrontation between Israel and Egypt in Sinai could look like.' -- Hillel Frisch, Professor of Political and Middle East Studies, Bar-Ilan University [Subject: Israeli studies, Middle East Studies, Military Studies, Politics]

276 pages

Copyright: 7/3/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/9780853038382_477c0eff-1a89-4cf8-bd16-870e0e752c7f.jpg?v=1528738738
9780853038450
Place, Memory and Myth in Contemporary Israeli Cinema

Zanger, Anat

This book examines several Israeli fictional and non-fictional films, and how their portrayal of landscape and territory provides a unique perspective on Jewish and Israeli identity. The book demonstrates how space in film is not only a 'container' for events in the plot, but an event in and of itself, since space and place are significant elements in the on-going negotiations regarding Jewish and Israeli identity. Films capture more than just the outward appearance of a place: they also record a web of unruly traces of economic, social, and political systems. Almost 2,000 years of Jewish exile created a gap between the idea of 'the Israeli place' and how the modern State of Israel has actualized that idea. Israeli cinema contains layered expressions of this issue, and, in this book, place and space function both as the subject matter of the analysis and as a theoretical tool. This innovative perspective will enable readers to discern themes significant both to contemporary culture (maps, borders, checkpoints, and military zones) and Jewish mythology (garden, desert, water, Jerusalem, and sacred space). Place, Memory and Myth in Contemporary Israeli Cinema includes references to Israeli literature and art, and it interweaves observations from the fields of visual studies, cultural studies, mythology, and Jewish thought to create a thought-provoking analysis. *** Given the number of important, critically recognized Israeli films, this is a welcome book. ...Zanger's attention to the place of minorities--including women, Mizrahim, and Arabs--within Israel greatly enchances the book's timely appeal. Israel's legitimacy is under assault from within and without by a coalition of left-wing radicals, Palestinians and their sympathizers, and Muslim fundamentalists. All these groups deny the existence of a Jewish nation and argue that Jews do not need a nation state. Hence, Israel should either disappear completely or become 'a state of all its citizens' devoid of any Jewish symbol or identity. The origins of this campaign are twofold. One derives from the traditional opposition that has accompanied Zionism from its inception. The second is contemporary, articulating the post-ist fads that swamped the West since the 1980s. The past occupies a prominent place in this crusade that aims at the present and future. Traditional historiography, scientific and pseudo-scientific, and the new vogue of memory and narrative, that claims to be the true history of human experience, are equally abused to delegitimize Israel. This book follows these two paths, while avoiding disputes over current political issues. First, it portrays the disciplinary background - the evolution of the modern history discipline. Subsequently, it focuses on the conflicting approaches to the cardinal issue of Zionism's essence: Is it a national liberation movement of European origin that offered a solution to the modern Jewish Question in a world of nationalities? The book follows the plans to create the figure of the New Jew in Eretz Yisrael, as part of a personal, national, and universal revolution, and it explores the figure and traits of the pioneer. It also examines how cinema has presented the Zionist idea. Cinema and Zionism analyzes the plots, the modes of expression, the themes, and the ideological elements that typify these films, and it positions them within the structure of the Zionist idea. It also engages with connections between the Zionist idea and the cinema through a discussion on the cinematic endeavors and the relationships between the filmmakers and national institutions. The correlation between the two histories is revealed with all its complexity and depth. The book sheds light on a distinctive perspective in the narrative of Eretz Yisrael - that of the creation and consumption of a new culture. The tales of working on the films - how they were prepared and shot, and their ultimate reception - are interwoven with outlines of the films themselves. Together, they create a portrait of an ideological society that distilled events and incidents into myths aimed at forging the Zionist outlook and instructing Zionist settlers toward fulfilling its goals. ...explicit, enlightening, and, at times, even provocative. It deals with the complex and still relevant issue of Zionist leaders' relationships between the American-Jewish institutions and the latter's approach to what was to become the State of Israel, including their attempts to shape the destiny of the nation-in-waiting through the first Jewish films produced in Palestine. In this context, Israeli society provides a rare test case, as nearly half of its population is made up of various minorities. The book's articles are written by key Israeli minority studies and media scholars, with special emphasis on those who are themselves part of minority groups. The Palestinian Party that he headed after the First World War was split, conflicted and rife with corruption. In particular, it was isolated, with neighbouring Arab countries more concerned with their own problems. In light of this state of affairs, Haj Amin sought to enlist the help of the Arab and Muslim world in favor of the Palestinians. How did he do this? When appealing to the Arab world, he utilized the myth that the Zionists intended to use the Land of Israel as a base from which they would seek to conquer all Arab countries; when appealing to the Muslim world, he said that the Jews wished to destroy the al-Aqsa mosque and build their temple on its ruins. Another of the Mufti's myths is the story of 'the ancient conspiracy', recounting the plot of the British and the Jews to expel the Arabs from Palestine and award the consequently uninhabited land to the Jews. Even though this 'plot' was unsubstantiated, at the time it became anchored in the consciousness of millions of local Palestinians who believed the Mufti's inventions and were alarmed by them. This remains true to a great degree to this very day. The book presents the Mufti's essays - the literal source of those myths, as well as notes and essays which reply to the ideas presented by Haj Amin. A leading authority on the British Mandate in Palestine and the rise of the state of Israel, Professor Michael J. Cohen focuses on these changing interests in this anthology of some of his seminal works. This book includes previously unpublished material and an introductory chapter surveying the changing views and interpretations of the Declaration over the past 100 years. Britain's imperial interests are the key to understanding these changes, why she supported the Zionist cause until the mid-1930s, and why her priorities changed thereafter. After the Second World War her priorities changed once again and Allied strategic planners drew up contingency plans to meet the threat of a potential Third World War against the Soviet bloc. This anthology closes with an analysis of the botched Suez War. This caused not only the failure of the military operation, but a grave crisis with the Americans, Eden's fall from power, and the denouement of Britain's Middle East hegemony. Barzilay-Yegar traces the shifting meanings of the phrase from its first coining in the Balfour Declaration of 1917, to international recognition when it was included in the League of Nations' Mandate for Britain to administer Palestine, granted in 1923. The concept remained elastic throughout this period, and interpretations were made to suit different political and philosophical standpoints. This was done on two levels: the theoretical thinking which followed the drafting of the Mandate, and the actual political practice in Palestine. The first part of the book deals with the various definitions given to 'A National Home' during the Military Administration in response to pressures applied to British politicians, the background of Jewish-Arab expectations, and the economic and administrative problems caused by the policy of keeping the status-quo. The second part deals with the period of the Civil Administration and describes the efforts to define the concept until the White Paper of 1922. The perception was that a humorous approach might threaten the sanctity of its memory, or evoke feelings of disrespect towards the subject and hurt Holocaust survivors' feelings. But, from the 1990s, a new unofficial path of commemoration has been taking shape. Texts that combine the Holocaust with humour, satire, and parody are a major aspect of it, but this remains controversial. Often, Holocaust humour is perceived as part of a dangerous process that normalizes Nazism and Hitler. In opposition to these ideas, author Steir-Livny claims that in Israel, a unique post-traumatic society where the trauma lives as an integral part of the present, Holocaust humour in Hebrew functions as an important defence mechanism. The book argues that Holocaust humour, satire, and parody rebel against the way this trauma affects Israeli society in the present by challenging and deconstructing the fear. Is It Ok to Laugh About It? shows that paradoxically, Holocaust humour also strengthens the dominance of the trauma in the present by inserting it even more into everyday life and popular culture. Thus, Holocaust humour, satire, and parody in Israel are a double-edged sword: on the one hand, they function as an attempt to fight the acting out of the trauma in Israeli society but, on the other, they strengthen certain elements of it. There is a contradictory process of dissociation and assimilation occurring at the same time, which attests to the dominance of the trauma in the Jewish-Israelis' identity. This innovative and intriguing analysis will challenge the borders of Holocaust research and commemoration. *** 'Is It OK to Laugh About It?' offers an excellent analysis of Israeli culture and its approach to humor. Steir-Livny's writing style is scholarly, but his book will appeal to general readers who are interested in the subject matter. It adds insight and understanding to the complex relationship that still exists between American Jews, Israel and the United States government. On a brisk winter day in 1913, Rae Landy boarded a ship headed to Palestine. Her final destination was Jerusalem, a desolate city filled with disease and poverty, languishing under the indifferent rule of the Ottoman Empire. Along with nursing partner Rose Kaplan, her mandate was to set up a district nursing system under the auspices of a new Zionist women's organization called Hadassah. The two nurses braved tremendous hardships to bring hope and better health to the people of that ancient city. Arriving in Palestine full of high aspirations and ideals, the nurses were rapidly jolted to reality when faced with people's deplorable living conditions and mistrust. They were shocked to see that many diseases were treated with magical spells and amulets. As the nurses slowly carved out a place for themselves in the city, gaining the loyalty and then the love of their patients, they enjoyed a lively social life with the many colourful personalities that lived in and visited Jerusalem. The sudden eruption of World War I was catastrophic for Palestine, particularly in Jerusalem, and brought a dramatic halt to their way of life. When Rose had to leave the country at the end of 1914, Rae was all alone, facing the onslaught of famine, starvation, and the never-ending misery of the people. *** I would highly recommend Winds over Jerusalem for a synagogue library. It would make a good gift book for anyone going into the medical profession and it is also a good choice to buy for a young adult. --AJL Newsletter, November/December 2017 [Subject: Jewish Studies, Gender Studies, Hadassah, Palestine Studies, History]

254 pages

Copyright: 3/16/2017

A Temporary Title

Amiel, Irit

Born in 1931 to a secular Jewish family in Poland, Irit Amiel grew up in the city of Czestochowa with its significant Jewish community of 30,000. She survived the Second World War having escaped from the ghetto and living under false Aryan papers, in various places. In the autumn of 1945 and at the age of 14, she set on a brave journey to the Middle East. She escaped from Europe via illegal smuggling routes and displaced persons camps in Germany, Italy, and Cyprus, finally reaching Eretz Israel in December 1947. She settled in a kibbutz and participated in the joint effort of building the country with native Israelis and Shoah survivors. There she met the love of her life, a charming Israeli Palmachnik of Moroccan heritage, Chuzy Amiel. Together they started a new life and raised a family. Only when her grandchildren reached their teens was she ready to tell her story, understanding her experiences are unique and that the passage of time will erase the memories of yesterday. Irit talks to herself throughout the book, and in her unique style of writing each chapter is both part of the whole and an individual story at the same time. In this way her individual voice becomes the voice of her generation. There are three broad phases. The first, from the 1950s-the 'honeymoon' period-began as African countries started to gain independence and Israel was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with them. This included offering assistance in various fields, especially in new agricultural technology and water management to ensure food security and reduce the poverty and hunger suffered by many African countries. In her activities in Africa, Israel emphasized the importance of training manpower in different fields. By 2015, more than 20,000 African students had taken part in courses in Israel. The second period-disengagement-began in October 1973 during the Yom Kippur War, when almost all sub-Saharan Africa broke off relations with Israel out of solidarity with Egypt, one of the founders of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The third period-renewal-began in 1982 when many African countries decided to benefit again from Israel's innovative abilities in many areas and, in this way, to enjoy assistance from both Israel and Arab countries. Today Israel has diplomatic relations with 41 African countries, and the continent forms a key part of Israeli security, economic, and diplomatic strategy. The epilogue describes Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's June 2016 visit to five East African countries, his plan to visit West Africa, and the main reasons for these visits. No-one is better placed than Dr Oded to analyse Israel's complex relationship with African countries from the 1950s to the present day. He worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Malawi; in the 1990s was Israel's ambassador to Swaziland, Lesotho, Kenya and Zambia, and is currently the Head of the Africa Unit at the Truman Research Institute of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Throughout the various plots and images from Leaving Jerusalem by Railway through My Michael, Cemetery Club, Inferno and JeruZalem, constant movement is evident: the wandering and journeying movement of exiled figures to and from Jerusalem and the movement between times: histories, archives and images transforming according to social and cultural shifts.
While Jerusalem is a spatially and temporally existing place, the book exposes the mythological Israeli space, and the cracks that have appeared in it.

184 pages 52 black and white illustrations

Copyright: 1/10/2019

The Tehran Children, Anders' Army and their Escape from Stalin's Siberia, 1939–1943
Grigsby, Randy

In October 1938 eight-year-old Josef Rosenbaum, his mother and younger sister, set out from Germany on a cruel odyssey fleeing into eastern Europe along with thousands of other refugees.
Sent to Siberian slave labor camps in the wildernesses, they suffered brutal cold, famine, and disease and hundreds perished, including Joe’s mother and sister. There seems to be a large blind spot for the lethal antisemitism that has long blighted Muslim countries and remains prevalent today throughout the Middle East and the world.
This failure of collective vision has been responsible for inflicting incalculable and avoidable suffering on generations of both Jews and Arabs – as was vividly illustrated by the Hamas massacre of 7 October 2023 and the war it triggered. Drawing on multiple scholarly sources, Professor David Stone summarises the overwhelming evidence that eliminationist antisemitism is the ‘elephant in the room’ – the underlying cause and principal driver of the hundred-year long Arab-Jewish (now misleadingly reframed as Israeli–Palestinian) conflict – and is the main reason it remains unresolved. Until that political and genocidal bigotry is confronted, the conflict is likely to continue.
The book concludes with a call to action. There is a moral obligation upon all of us – regardless of nationality, ethnicity, religion or politics – to acknowledge this apparently immoveable obstacle to peace and to insist that the international community takes action. The most urgent priority is to alert the world to the existence of antisemitic antiIsraelism. The purpose of this book is to empower readers with the knowledge to take that crucial first step towards peace and justice not just for Israelis and Arabs, but for humanity as a whole.

248 pages 10 black and white illustrations

Copyright: 18/09/2024

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/files/9781803710648_943a58bc-5af9-4137-b48b-b60feb2d897e.jpg?v=1727859636
netanyahu-s-israel
Netanyahu’s Israel

Rise of the Far Right

Confino, Jotam

Jotam Confino has been my go-to correspondent from Israel since the October 7th massacre and subsequent conflict. With a new translation of a selection of her poetry and fiction from Hebrew into English, literary scholars Herbert Levine and Reena Spicehandler have revived the complex figure of Elisheva, who had been widely read and admired in Palestine in the first half of the twentieth century. A Gentile born and raised in Russia by Anglophile parents, Elisheva (an expert linguist) fell in love with Palestine and Hebrew. Elisheva incarnates a unique intersectional identity, expressed beautifully in her literary output. This volume makes an important contribution to a revised canon and will make a fascinating and creative addition to courses on Hebrew literature; gender in the Jewish experience, and women’s and cultural studies.
Lori Lefkovitz, Ruderman Professor of Jewish Studies and Director of Jewish Studies, Professor of English, Northeastern University

Elisheva, a fascinating early 20th century boundary-crossing, bridge-seeking multicultural and multi-lingual writer of both poetry and prose, has – at last – been gracefully, sensitively, translated into English in this landmark volume by Herbert Levine and Reena Spicehandler. In an era in which "outsider" voices are at last being heard, the voice of Elisheva, a Russian-British-Christian in pre-state Israel, is a first among equals. Russian-born Elisheva Bukhovsky was a Hebrew writer and a Gentile who emigrated to Palestine with her husband and daughter to become a part of the Jewish national revival. Like most Hebrew writers of her generation, she did her creative work in a language not hers by birth. She was one of the first poets to write in the idiomatic language of the Yishuv, the Hebrew-speaking Jewish settlement in Palestine, while also making the poems musical through rhyme and meter.
This book, highly suitable for classroom use, presents her best poems in the original Hebrew and in English translation. In her fiction, she explored relationships between Jews and Gentiles in Russia, told through the lens of male-female relations in courtship and marriage. In her stories and in her novel Byways, excerpted in this book, she adopted the viewpoints of both Gentiles and Jews in a modernizing Russia, where friendly relations between them were possible, but where deep mutual understanding remained absent.
This book, highly suitable for classroom use, presents her best poems in the original Hebrew and in English translation.
