He was throughout a close observer of the Jewish scene and latterly a prominent participant. These wide-ranging studies graphically present significant features of Jewish public life in Anglo-Jewry or bearing upon that community. They include appraisals of conflicting attitudes within both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the author's contemporary impressions of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, of which he first became a member in 1945, written in 1948-9; his assessments of transformations in priorities during the second half of the 20th century; the role of the Jewish intellectual and biographical studies or character portrayals of leading personalities, including Sir Isaiah Berlin, Sir Arthur Goodhart, Dr Vivian Lipman and Israel Zangwill. Judge Finestein writes as a historian with often personal knowledge of whom and of what he describes. This insightful and readable work, of human interest, is meant for the general reader as much as for the Jewish communal activist or scholar.

322 pages

Copyright: 11/30/2002

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/0853034435_2254be89-f82c-4835-892c-ab0299362358.jpg?v=1528738446
9780853034490
For Our Freedom and Yours
The Jewish Labour Bund in Poland 1939-1949
Blatman, Daniel

Before the Second World War the Jewish Labour party, the Bund, was one of the most important Jewish parties in Poland. As a socialist party, the Bund believed that the Jewish community could build on, and consolidate, its roots in Poland; develop its Jewish culture on the basis of its natural language, Yiddish; and exert an influence in the Polish Socialist camp, towards the creation of a regime of social justice and civic equality for all. From its very inception in the late-nineteenth century, the Bund fought the effort of the Zionist movement to establish a separate national territory in Palestine for the Jewish people. The Nazi occupation of Poland put this ideology to a severe test. The attitude of Polish society to the Jewish tragedy, the alienated response of the Polish underground to the Jews' armed resistance efforts, and the Jewish policies of the Polish Government-in-Exile in London drove the Bund - now an underground party - into a crisis. For Our Freedom and Yours explores Bund members' attempts to chart a course through this tragic morass and to survive a movement with a unique ideology offering its own path for Jewish existence in Eastern Europe.

242 pages

Copyright: 5/1/2003

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/0853034494_78d9fce2-e237-4011-8b50-f04891d64214.jpg?v=1528738453
9780853035077
Jewish Life in Cracow 1918-1939

Martin, Sean

Re-evaluates the way Jews lived among Poles without abandoning their Jewish heritage. The essays examine the presence both of explicitly anti-Semitic writing and apparently anti-Jewish stereotypes in the work of writers who were not consciously hostile to Jews. The book scrutinizes assumptions about the relative absence of anti-Semitism in Britain, the image of Germany as resistant to Jewish assimilation, and of Italy as particularly hospitable to Jews. The essays are placed in a comparative framework in order to examine the representation of Jews both within particular national cultures and in the context of Western European modernity. The volume considers the ways in which anti-Semitism functioned within liberal culture in the nineteenth century as part of the broader history of oppression with which Western modernity has been complicit.

247 pages

Copyright: 6/10/2004

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/0853035180_f4f9a639-0c4a-4d52-ba7a-7f0122d9f2e7.jpg?v=1528738502
9780853035404
German Writers in French Exile 1933-1940

Mauthner, Martin

This book is an account of what happened to some of the best German writers and journalists after they fled the Nazi terror to find shelter in France. In addition to his numerous books Roth wrote many articles for a wide range of journals in Britain and overseas, notably in America, on Jewish life and history. This volume comprises a substantial collection of them, selected for their special and continuing Jewish appeal and human interest, none of which have appeared in book form before. Roth loved travel and his many journeys to Europe inevitably included visits to regions of past or then current Jewish residence. He was an acute observer of scenes, people, atmosphere and change. Characteristic of his approach are his historical accounts of some, to us, curious observances of familiar Jewish festivals in different localities he visited. Typical of his article titles are 'Was Hebrew ever a Dead Language', 'England and the Ninth of Av', 'Was there ever a Ban on Jews Returning to Spain' and 'Paradoxes of Jewish History'. Of particular interest is the first article in the book, written in 1932, entitled 'Opportunities that Pass: A Plea for the Study of Disappearing Customs and Folklore'. Was it an unwitting prophecy, or did he have an observer's and historian's presentiment of what lay ahead. Cecil Roth was a unique personality. He gave of his best in whatever he did. He achieved much. It covers Jews in various aspects of resistance in Greece and other concentration camps. The book is a contribution to the overall story of Greek resistance against the Nazi occupiers and provides hitherto unknown stories of their contributions to that fight. Based on interviews and archival research Bowman has assembled a preliminary list of over 650 individuals who fought or served with the Greek Resistance forces. These include andartes and andartissas, interpreters, recruiters, doctors, spies, nurses, organizers, and a number of non Greek Jews who volunteered or were trapped in Greece during the war years. While the murder of nearly 90% of Greek Jews by the Nazis has begun to enter the holocaust story, the participation of Greek Jews in the war against the Nazis is virtually unknown. Greek Jews actively fought in the war against the Italian and German invaders. Veterans and young Jewish males and females went to the mountains to fight or serve in various ways in the andartiko among the several Greek Resistance movements. Other Jews remained in urban areas where they joined different Resistance cells whether as active saboteurs or in leadership roles. A number of Jews appear on the payrolls of Force 133. Additionally Greek Jews participated in the Sonderkommando revolt in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp in October 1944 while others fought in the Warsaw revolt from August to October 1944.

136 pages

Copyright: 2/1/2006

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/0853035997_38e7fd00-38c6-4af1-a3f6-b870cc5e8425.jpg?v=1528738542
9780853036029
The Lie that Will Not Die
The Protocols of the Elders of Zion

Ben-Itto, Hadassa

With a new Introduction by Dave Rich

How encouraging to think that when people tell racist lies there are courts in which the slandered can prove that they're being slandered, and that judges can make the world a better place.
Tom Payne, The Telegraph
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/3639703/Dont-give-cretins-any-ideas.html

This is an impressive and engaging work, and for all of the important historical material made available, it is extremely readable. Previously only analyzed in academic, footnoted studies, the history of the Protocols is presented here by Judge Hadassa Ben-Itto in an eminently readable, fascinating account, telling the stories of the numerous people involved over the hundred years that the forgery has existed. Above all, this is the story of a judge who follows the Protocols into lawyers' chambers and into courtrooms in Switzerland, in South Africa, in Germany, in the United States and in Russia, and presents the reader with a detailed critical analysis of legal proceedings which culminated in fascinating courtroom drama. The study is constructed around four rhetorical themes: 'crusade', 'conversion', 'crucifixion' and 'apocalypse', and traces these through a wide variety of texts, including public lectures, sermons, press articles, political speeches and memoirs, pre-millennialist writings, cartoons, plays, poetry and popular fiction. The central argument is that in the context of rhetorically constructed 'Christian warfare', religious language took on political significance, and old allegations against Jews began to recirculate. The study examines the religious, political and sexual fears associated by Christians with Jews during and after the war, and discusses the ways in which Anglo-Jewish writers, including G. B. Many were British-born or living in Britain, but large numbers of Jews in Palestine also volunteered. The Rolls of Honor contained in this book show that many of these men and women gave their lives in the war while many more were wounded. It also reveals how the response from British Jews to the call to arms outstripped that of any other UK group as a percentage of the population. In addition, there is a detailed record of Jewish prisoners of war of the Germans, of the Japanese, and of those who served in Special Forces. We Will Remember Them is a vital tribute to those Palestinian/Israeli subjects who volunteered for active duty under the administration of the British Mandate, as well as to those for whom being Jewish also meant being British and who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of their country. Using contemporary accounts, broadsides and hitherto unpublished archival material, Faith Against Reason is an incisive and indispensable contribution to an understanding of the fissures and fragmentation besetting Anglo-Jewry in modern times. At its core are the mavericks, ministers, grandees and God-fearers who grappled with the currents and complexities of the hour - and with each other - in their pursuit of communal power and pulpit supremacy. The chroniclers of Anglo-Jewry have not always been kind to Britain's Chief Rabbis. In truth, the verdicts have been mixed, and sometimes muted, but, with communal censure and strife continuing unabated, they have become increasingly forthright as the centuries have turned. In Faith Against Reason, some of these verdicts are subjected to scrutiny; others emerge and, with them, a clearer picture of the Chief Rabbinical stance on religious pluralism.

476 pages

Copyright: 9/1/2008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/9780853036791_af21f7e0-c6bf-41f8-b44a-69d20a460165.jpg?v=1528738611
9780853036913
The King's Own Loyal Enemy Aliens
German and Austrian Refugees in Britain's Armed Forces, 1939-45
Leighton-Langer, Peter

During the Second World War, 10,000 Germans and Austrians volunteered to join the British Forces from the UK. Most were refugees, but there were others also. From 1939 until 1943 most served in the 18 so-called Alien Companies of the Pioneer Corps. After that almost all branches of the services were opened to them and they used this chance to its fullest extent. In this period they were spread over the whole of the Navy, the Army, and the RAF. To write the history of the Alien Pioneers is not difficult. The history of the men who in 1943 were dispersed over all the rest of the services however is the history of the Services as a whole. Peter Leighton-Langer, himself one of the 10,000, has tried to solve this by concentrating on the fate and the actions of individuals, who may or may not be typical for all the others. To do this he has been in direct or indirect contact with some 600 of his former colleagues, whose adventures he cites, often in their own words, to give a picture of the whole. Some of their stories are exciting, others tell of the frustration of men who wanted to get at the enemy, but were treated as untrustworthy because of their nationality. All risked their lives, for had they fallen into enemy hands and been recognised for what they were, everyone would have been treated as a traitor. All knew that. Few returned to their countries of origin. Many stayed in Britain and in due course became loyal British citizens. They should not be forgotten. This man, later known as St. Paul, set the tone for Christianity, including an emphasis on celibacy, the theory of divine grace and salvation, and the elimination of circumcision. It was Paul who wrote a large part of the New Testament, and who called it euangelion, the gospel. There is another side of Paul, however, that has been little studied and that is his connection to the Roman military establishment and its intelligence arm. While other scholars and writers have suggested the idea that Paul was cooperating with the Romans, this is the first book-length study to document it in detail. By looking at the traditional story through a new lens, some of the thorniest questions and contradictions in Paul's life can be unravelled. How did he come to work for the Temple authorities who collaborated with the Romans? How was he able to escape from legal situations in which others would have been killed? Why were so many Jews trying to have Paul killed and to which sect did they belong? These and other mysteries will be solved as the authors follow Paul's career and his connections to Roman intelligence.

284 pages

Copyright: 6/16/2008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/9780853037019_2f995da3-b103-464f-9eb4-f8a7c8711c74.jpg?v=1528738627
9780853037071
War or Revolution
Russian Jews and Conscription in Britain, 1917
Shukman, Harold

When Britain was compelled to introduce conscription in 1916, the question arose of what to do with its 'friendly aliens'-its 30,000 Russian-Jewish refugees of military age. The Tsar didn't want them back to serve in his army, and they had no desire to help his war effort. But when sections of the British press commented that as asylum seekers they should show gratitude and join up, a campaign with strong anti-Semitic overtones took off and became Parliamentary business. Then the Tsar was overthrown, and by the summer of 1917 the question was settled with the new regime: Russian Jews of military age had to choose either to join the British Army or to return to Russia to serve there. MI5 and Special Branch kept watch on the Communist Club in the West End, where Russian revolutionaries agitated tailors, cobblers and cabinet-makers who agonised over what to do. Many ended up in the British Army or were exempted for war work, but nearly 4,000 chose to go back to Russia-for a variety of reasons. Arriving there via the Arctic within weeks and days of the Bolshevik revolution, they found a vacuum of authority, which soon turned into the chaos and dangers of civil war. How they fared and how they struggled to return to their families in Britain is the story of War or Revolution. With the help of personal documents, official British and Russian archives, and interviews of survivors and their families, the author illuminates an unknown corner of the First World War and sets it against the background of the period.

157 pages

Copyright: 5/1/2006

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/0853037078_2366b5fd-c6c9-484d-9c7d-5181dc5f55a4.jpg?v=1528738632
9780853037101
Jews in Glasgow 1879-1939
Immigration and Integration
Braber, Ben

This is the first study of the integration of Jewish immigrants, from eastern and central Europe, into Scotland and places Scottish Jewish history in context. A special chapter is devoted to post-1945 developments bringing the history of the Jews in Glasgow up to the present day. This report identified the significant difficulties in which many of the Orthodox institutions of British Jewry found themselves: the United Synagogue itself, the Chief Rabbinate, and the Bet Din - its religious court. It suggested that the root cause of the problems was a shift away from 'minhag Anglia, a celebration of the twofold blessing of being Jewish and British'. This work examines the thought and influence of the three Chief Rabbis whose terms in office have begun and ended during the twentieth century. It follows the theological shifts that have occurred amongst the religious leadership of Orthodox Judaism in Britain and assesses the influence of factors such as immigration and the so-called 'Jacobs Affair' in effecting these changes. The Jewish community in Britain provides a model of a religious minority group's attempt to secure its survival in the midst of a host society that espouses alternative values derived either from secularism or an alternative religious system. Through an in-depth analysis of the theology of Chief Rabbi Joseph Herman Hertz, this work identifies a paradigm that was established for Jews in Britain of a strong and confident Orthodoxy that champions interaction in the host society. The Chief Rabbinates of Israel Brodie and Immanuel Jakobovits were each influenced in different ways by the burgeoning influence of alternative models for Orthodox Judaism. This work considers how this facilitated the displacement of the community's fervour for unity with religious polarisation; and analyses how its religious leadership adopted a theology which seemed to call on Anglo-Jewry to forsake its ideology of meaningful interaction to secure its religious identity.

240 pages

Copyright: 10/1/2006

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/0853037132_d2791039-b8e6-4471-8dba-7f57740d824d.jpg?v=1528738637
9780853037156
Novogrudok
The History of a Shtetl
Edited by: Kagan, Jack

'This book is a moving testimony to a world that no longer exists. The essays draw upon the research of individual specialists to explore a theme which has otherwise been covered mainly by works which have confined themselves to narrower chronological periods. These were defined and planned well in advance, with a view to a final confrontation for the domination of Europe. This policy regarded 'Jewish Bolshevism' as the main obstacle to securing victory in the coming confrontation, hence its rise and fall constituted a yard-stick in the formulation of Germany's relationship with the Soviet Union. Soviet foreign policy towards Nazi Germany was much more pragmatic. Soviet diplomatic activity was aimed at thwarting the German threat to Soviet territorial integrity and its political regime. By putting ideological principles to one side, belittling the danger of Nazi anti-Semitic policy for Jews themselves and for free Europe in its entirety, and dismissing Jews from senior positions in the Soviet hierarchy they hoped to stave off the conflict. From both the German and the Soviet perspective, the Jewish factor was significant. The purpose of this book is to assess its place and influence upon the mutual relations between the two countries in the years 1933-1941. Susan Cohen highlights the challenges that Rathbone faced, especially from within government from officials who did not share her philosophy on rescue. Alongside Licoricia's body was that of her Christian maid, Alice. Why was Licoricia killed? And why was her death reported as far away as Germany? In this ground-breaking new book, Suzanne Bartlet draws on extensive research in the fiscal archives of medieval England, most notably those of the Jewish Exchequer, to examine the family history behind the famous murder. This is the story of Licoricia's route to wealth through advantageous marriages (her second amidst a divorce scandal which was referred to the Beth Din in Paris) and business acumen, the business contacts she made, the close relationship she appears to have had with King Henry III, and the altogether more mixed fortunes of her sons. By using Licoricia's family as an example, Bartlet demonstrates the gradual deterioration in the conditions of even the wealthiest Jews in England in the run up to the Expulsion of 1290, as well as drawing together the fragments of a medieval life which has long fascinated historians, but has never been fully investigated. The book focuses on the objects of everyday life that were used and created by Jews, such as ritual baths, food, gravestones, portraits, furniture, as well as the synagogue. By uncovering these objects and exposing the common culture of the Jewish Atlantic world, it provides a fresh understanding of a crucial era in Jewish and American history. Messianism and secrecy were two keys to this shared culture. The Jews of the Atlantic world believed that the physical and spiritual could - and would - be united through the Messiah. They were deeply messianic and their belief permeated their visual and religious ethos. Messianism, Secrecy and Mysticism presents new insights about the origins of Jewish American messianism, helping readers better understand messianism in contemporary American society. It charts the shared culture of these Jews who lived in the port towns in the Caribbean and on both sides of the Atlantic, and author Laura Arnold Leibman argues that thinking about Judaism as an embodied religion is key to understanding their culture. Messianism, Secrecy and Mysticism makes early Jewish American history entertaining, accessible, and interesting to general readers, as well as to academic audiences. A companion website contains thousands of photographs of material culture from throughout the Jewish Atlantic world, as well as study guides for using the images - http://cdm.reed.edu/cdm4/jewishatlanticworld/ *** Leibman has written an extremely ambitious and significantly innovative study of Jewish colonial history. Through combining the study of what she describes as 'material biography' and Jewish religious beliefs centering on messianism, the author deciphers and retells the story of Jewish life in early America with energy and originality. No previous historical study of this group of immigrants exists, though they form one of the most high-profile groups of refugees to have come to Britain in the twentieth century, both as survivors of the Nazi terror and as high-achieving contributors to British society. In 1462, the Frankfurt City Council ordered the resettlement of the Jews in an especially constructed street, surrounded by walls and located at the very edge of the city. The three gates were closed at night, on Sundays, and during Christian holidays. The Frankfurt Judengasse was the first legally constructed space of a ghetto in the Holy Roman Empire, and one of the first in Europe. The economic, demographic, cultural, and religious significance of this community in the Early Modern era has been a neglected area of study. The significance of the Frankfurt community; the great number of sources for the Early Modern era which are still available despite all the losses; and the increasing interest in the history of the Jews in Germany since the 1990s - evident in an array of dissertation projects - almost inevitably led to the idea of organising a conference to once again direct attention on the Frankfurt Judengasse. The conference was organized by Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, represented by the Centre for Research in Early Modern History, Culture and Science and the Department of Jewish Studies, as well as the Frankfurt Jewish Museum, the Judengasse Museum and the Leo Baeck Institute in Jerusalem. Most of the essays in this collection were first presented at the May 2004 conference in Frankfurt. The authors cover a wide spectrum of themes on a great variety of aspects of Jewish life in the Frankfurt Judengasse, spanning a broad chronological arc from the Middle Ages to the dissolution of the Frankfurt Judengasse in the early years of the 19th century. During its lifetime (1939-46), the League held a regular program of cultural events ranging from concerts and theatre performances to publications and art exhibitions, as well as a 'university in exile.' Because of the restrictions on refugees imposed by the British authorities, this cultural program served very much as a surrogate for direct political activity: the continuation of politics by other means. The study concludes by tracing the fate of those who returned to a now-divided Germany and the post-war integration of those who remained into British arts and society. Anglo-Jewry has never formed more than about one half of one per cent of the population, yet the figures show that their contribution to the armed forces has always been out of proportion to their numbers. Fighting Back provides an insight into the Anglo-Jewish contribution to the Allied victories over the Nazi and Japanese threats. The book also highlights the role of the Jews in the Spanish Civil War and the Korean War. Its wide-ranging approach to the contributions that Jews made looks at, among other things: the paratroopers at the Battle of Arnhem; the much neglected and almost forgotten Auxiliary Services of Civil Defense; the Jews at Bletchley Park; and the Jewish-Palestinian volunteers from Israel. Anglo-Jewry, together with Jews from Israel, may thus be deeply and justly proud of this history of fighting back, fighting for democracy, and fighting for peace. This book will stand as permanent testimony to the truth. *** In a war where ordinary people became extraordinary and the exceptional seemed commonplace, the unique circumstances and remarkable character of Britain's Jews nevertheless merit them additional honor....Sugarman's volume admirably fills a gap in both Jewish (particularly Anglo-Jewish) history and in the scholarship of World War II. -- NYMAS Review [Subject: Jewish Studies, Military History, World War II]~~

496 pages

Copyright: 6/30/2010

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/9780853039006_30099794-25bc-483f-bc4e-2de14f4b91f2.jpg?v=1528738820
9780853039037
The Jews of Italy, 1848-1915
Between Tradition and Transformation
Schächter, Elizabeth

In this book, author Elizabeth Schachter challenges the widely held view that Jewish integration in Italy - from the second emancipation (1848) to the First World War - was an unqualified success, and thus an anomaly in European Jewish history. She draws on contemporary Jewish journals, memoirs, autobiographies, oral testimony, private correspondence, and archival material to illustrate her case. Schachter explores the principal areas of concern for Jews in Italy: the tensions and pressures of acceptance in the host society, 'the anguish of assimilation;' the complex relationship between Jewish identity and nascent national identity; the erosion of the traditional bonds that bound the individual Jew to his community; and the abandonment of religious practices, leading, in some cases, to mixed marriages and conversion. All levels/libraries. -- Choice, Vol. 52, No. 10, June 2015 *** ...an important source of the condition of Jews in Germany, and especially during WWI, presenting their life and thoughts. -- AJL Reviews, May/June 2015 *** Loyal Sons is the first book-length English language account of Jewish soldiers in Kaiser Wilhelm's military. One of the great strengths of the book is that we hear the voices of these men in their own words... -- The NYMAS Review, Summer 2015 *** ...Appelbaum is very good at fleshing out the obscure and forgotten but often quite remarkable human beings whose vivid recollections of barracks life, infantry attacks, and operating rooms he uses to evoke the triumphs and hardships of Jewish service. -- H-Net Reviews in the Humanities & Social Sciences, H-War, October 2015 [Subject: History, Military Studies, Jewish Studies, German Studies, World War I]

382 pages

Copyright: 9/25/2014

Zakor v'Makor
Edited by: Cesarani, David; Kushner, Tony; Shain, Milton

This book was a finalist in the 2009 Jewish Book Council Awards in the category of Anthologies and Collections. The twelve essays in this fascinating collection range broadly over time, covering the period from early modern era to the early twenty first century. Their geographical scope is also impressive, including Europe, north and south America, Australia, north and South Africa and the far east, the 'old' and the 'new' worlds. What unites these essays - whether dealing with centre or periphery - is the interrogation of place and (displacement) in the Jewish experience and in the construction of Jewish identities. These studies are given further complexity and unity of purpose by studying the relationship of history and memory in negotiating Jewish identities in relation to time and place. What emerges is a rich volume bringing together established academics and younger scholars. All the essays have a strong historical context but they provide insights informed by the fields of literary, cultural, geographical, anthropological, racial and ethnic and sociological studies. The dynamics between migration and settlement and the processes of racialisation run across this volume as a whole, adding to its multi-layered, challenging and ultimately exciting nature.

189 pages

Copyright: 1/15/2009

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/1553/products/9780853039501_ff0ac846-3a21-4546-815b-30f7c55a2889.jpg?v=1528738858
9780853039563
Soldiers' Tales
Two Palestinian Jewish Soldiers in the Ottoman Army during the First World War
Abramson, Glenda

Yehuda Amon and Haim Nahmias were middle-class Jerusalem Jews who were conscripted into the Ottoman army and transported to Western Anatolia with the labor battalions during World War I. They kept detailed notes of their dreadful experiences which they later extended into complete narratives. Both diaries were discovered only recently and both appear here for the first time in this English translation. In addition to the translation of the diaries, the book includes a detailed introduction which describes life in the Jewish settlement in Palestine during the war under the autocratic rule of Jemal Pasha, the Governor of Syria and Palestine. It provides insight into the Ottoman army in the Middle East and the declining years of the Ottoman Empire, as seen through the two diaries and also through unpublished letters of Yehuda Burla, another Palestinian Jewish conscript who later became a well-known Hebrew author. The book also contains a detailed description of the Yishuv during the early years of the war, including the devastating locust plague of 1915. *** The study of the Great War has traditionally focused on the grand strategies of leaders and generals while little attention was given to the simple soldier. In this book, Glenda Abramson uncovers two war diaries by Jewish soldiers who served in the Ottoman army during the war, thus providing invaluable insights into the thoughts and experiences of those who paid the price. -- Michael Keren, Professor and Canada Research Chair, U. of Calgary *** ...Amon's and Nahmias' stories are punctuated as well by flashes of erudition and even humor (mostly irony), and valuably provides insight into sorely neglected areas of the Great War, namely the lives of lowly Amele soldiers in Western Anatolia, of Jews certainly, but also their companions in misfortune, Turks, Arabs, Kurds and Christians. -- Mark L.
